Displacement hulls are supported by buoyancy, but higher speed creates more drag and larger waves. At a certain point, extra power mostly makes bigger waves rather than more speed.

Planing hulls reduce drag by riding partly on top of the water. They can go faster, but they still hit waves and face major structural loads and fuel costs.
