Catamarans feature a massive open gap between their twin hulls, requiring exceptionally heavy and complex structural cross-beams to withstand intense torsional twisting stresses. In contrast, trimarans utilize much narrower gaps between the central hull and outriggers, significantly reducing the unsupported span of the upper deck.

This geometric layout allows shipbuilders to reduce total structural steel weight while maintaining simpler engineering parameters. The resulting high-capacity cross-deck offers a continuous working area capable of supporting heavy localized loads, including military weapon systems, helicopters, and heavy industrial machinery.
