As the ferry approaches a terminal the forward propeller comes into play. It provides reverse thrust to slow the vessel down and creates water flow over the rudder so the captain can keep precise control at low speed.
The forward rudder remains locked during the crossing because an unused rudder can move in the water flow and damage its mounting. It is unlocked only during docking when accurate steering is most important.
