An industrial fire broke out around 9 p.m. at a chemical process unit at the LyondellBasell Bayport facility near Pasadena, Texas. Firefighters, hazmat teams, and multiple responding agencies remain on scene working to bring the incident under control. Officials say no injuries have been reported and all personnel are accounted for.
According to La Porte Office of Emergency Management, flames and smoke may still be visible from the facility at 10801 Choate Road, but no action is required from the community at this time. Meanwhile, the LyondellBasell Bayport CAER Line reported the incident began as an operational upset that caused flaring, a safety process used to burn off excess process materials during abnormal conditions. In a statement, Lina Hidalgo, Harris County Judge, said crews are working to close a valve releasing a mix of chemicals and that the fire is now contained and not expected to spread further. She added that air monitoring stations have been set up around the site, the chemicals burning off are not posing a threat to the community, and the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office will investigate the cause once the fire is extinguished and the scene is safe.
