The founding AFL franchises included another Texas team, the Houston Oilers. The two-time AFL champions played at college stadiums before taking up permanent residence at the Astrodome in 1968. The rival leagues merged two years later, with the AFL franchises joining three existing NFL teams to form the NFL's American Football Conference. In August 1995, owner Bud Adams announced a deal to move the team to Nashville and become the Tennessee Titans. The stunned local fanbase swiftly abandoned the once-beloved franchise. Just over 15,000 people attended the Oilers’ final game on December 15, 1996—the smallest home crowd in the team’s 37-year history.
