Houston authorities are investigating a series of deadly incidents across the city, including a fatal wrong-way crash just before 1 a.m. on the East Freeway near Lockwood Drive, where a Nissan sports car traveling eastbound in westbound lanes slammed into a Kia sedan, killing the male Nissan driver and critically injuring a woman in the Kia; the impact sparked a fire and shutdowns are expected for hours as investigators work to identify the driver, with possible video from a nearby TXDOT crew. Earlier, a motorcyclist was killed around 11 p.m. on the 12300 block of the East Freeway after reportedly speeding, striking a curb while attempting to exit, and being ejected; he was not wearing a helmet and no other vehicles were involved. Around 9:20 p.m., a security guard was fatally shot during an armed robbery at an illegal game room in the 7000 block of Bissonnet, where suspects fled and police are reviewing surveillance footage. Meanwhile, firefighters quickly brought an 8 p.m. house fire under control near Mulholland Drive and West Bellfort Avenue; all four residents escaped safely, though the home sustained significant damage after flames spread from inside the walls into the attic.
