After giving birth, hormone levels drop dramatically.
Progesterone, estradiol and testosterone all play important roles in the brain, influencing mood, memory, sleep, motivation and how our brain cells communicate. Yet after birth, these hormones fall rapidly, and for many women, that can leave them struggling with their mental health.
Too often, these symptoms are viewed purely through a psychiatric lens, without considering the underlying hormonal changes taking place which means that hormone treatments are seldom prescribed to these women.
Understanding what happens to our hormones after pregnancy isn’t about dismissing mental health. It’s about recognising that hormones are a fundamental part of brain health and therefore hormone treatments deserve to considered as a treatment option.
