When people think about menopause in the workplace, they often think about hot flushes. The conversation quickly turns to fans, cooler offices and temperature-control measures.
While these adjustments may help some women, they miss the symptoms that are often having the greatest impact on women’s working lives.
For many, it’s brain fog, poor concentration, fatigue, anxiety and a loss of confidence that make it harder to think clearly, perform at work and feel like themselves. These are the symptoms that can lead women to reduce their hours, turn down promotions or leave the workforce altogether.
We need to move beyond seeing menopause as simply a problem of feeling too hot. Hormonal changes affect the whole body, and if we want to keep experienced, talented women in work, we need to recognise the symptoms that matter most and ensure women can access the right hormone treatment.
