Long before modern sleeping bags, nylon tents, or synthetic layers, legendary outdoorsman Horace Kephart was winter camping in the Appalachian Mountains using simple, rugged gear that actually worked — all in the pre-WW1 era.

In this video, I break down Kephart’s real pre-WW1 winter camping kit, based directly on his writings and field experience from the early 1900s.

You’ll see the actual style of shelter, sleep system, fire tools, cookware, etc. that Kephart relied on to stay warm and functional in harsh winter conditions — and why many of his ideas still make sense today.
