If you don't have any line, try approaching a neighbor with a beer in exchange for 3-4 feet of trimmer line. Then the cost is reduced to just patches. If you have patches or devise your own, the cost is zero!

I believe the Home Brew version is very good. It is competitive with commercially available snake tools with nylon bodies.
