During the Great Depression, nothing went to waste—not even leftover coffee.
In this video, I recreate a forgotten 1932 hobo treat sometimes called “Coffee You Can Eat,” made using just coffee, sugar, and gelatin.
This simple recipe shows how hoboes and hard-pressed families stretched what little they had into something filling, portable, and morale-boosting. Using either leftover camp coffee or instant coffee, this treat turns a common drink into a sliceable food—perfect for life on the road or in a hobo jungle.
These Depression-era recipes weren’t meant to be fancy. They were meant to last, travel, and use what was already on hand. I’ll show how it’s made, why gelatin was so common in the 1930s, and how a splash of cream or canned milk—when available—helped balance coffee’s bitterness.
If you enjoy real Great Depression food, hobo history, and old survival wisdom that still works today, consider subscribing to WayPoint Survival for more classic camping, bushcraft, and historical survival skills.
