Long before Gore-Tex, waterproof-breathable fabrics, and modern rain jackets, outdoorsmen still had to travel, camp, hunt, and work in bad weather.
In this video, I demonstrate several pieces of forgotten rain gear that were used more than 100 years ago, including a 1917 military raincoat, a World War I rubber ground cloth recommended by Horace Kephart, and a Civil War-era ground cloth poncho. I'll also demonstrate how vintage outdoorsmen waterproofed their leather boots using Hubbard's Shoe Grease and discuss the use of rubber galoshes for overland travel.
Can this forgotten rain gear still keep you dry today?
Let's find out.
If you enjoy historical camping, vintage gear, bushcraft, survival skills, Horace Kephart, and forgotten outdoor knowledge, you're in the right place.
