In the early 1900s, legendary outdoorsman Horace Kephart taught that a proper bough bed was the key to real comfort in the woods — even without a modern sleeping pad or mattress.

In this video, I demonstrate how Kephart described building a true wilderness bough bed, including how to harvest branches sustainably, how to lace and interweave them correctly, and why this old method works so well. I use cedar boughs, which not only provide spring and insulation, but also help repel insects and create a natural, aromatic sleeping surface.

Along the way, I share classic woodlore, practical tips, and common mistakes to avoid — lessons that were well understood a century ago and still matter today.
