In a 1921 issue of Outers Recreation Magazine, a clever trick was shared showing how a hobo could make a simple wooden clothes pin from a small branch using only basic tools. During the early 20th century, many traveling men carried only a few garments and needed a reliable way to dry their clothes along the rails.

In this video, I demonstrate how to find the right branch, shape it properly, and carve a working clothes pin using a small saw and pocket knife. This simple design keeps clothing attached to the line even in windy conditions while allowing the garment to hang full length so the sun and breeze can dry it quickly.

Sometimes the old ways are still the best ways, and this forgotten trick from 1921 is a perfect example of the ingenuity found in early outdoor and hobo culture.

Note: Always use proper safety precautions when working with cutting tools such as saws and knives.
