Hiking Notch Trail: Badlands National Park
A visit to Badlands National Park wouldn't be complete without hiking the Notch Trail. This trail is unique not only for the amazing landscape that it traverses, but for the ladder like steps you have to climb to access it's upper sections. The hike is relatively easy, but can get hot in the summer. There are also signs warning about the potential for rattlesnakes on the trail. This hike is a "there and back" hike. You come back the same way that you hike in because the trail dead ends at the edge of a 50 foot cliff where you can sit and take in views of the Badlands and the prairie beyond.
Badlands National park protects over 240 thousand acres of buttes, pinnacles, and mixed grass prairie. It was made a national park in the year 1978 and is such a unique place. The Badlands has several places to hike, picnic and learn about the flora, fauna, and ancient history of the area. The land was originally hunting grounds of many Native American tribes. It was originally the Lakota people that gave the area the origins of it's name. They called it "Mako Sica" or "Land Bad".
Unfortunately, we didn't get to stay very long in Badlands National Park because it was only a stop on our way to somewhere else, but this park definitely merits exploration! We hope to return someday. Also unfortunately I accidentally deleted a huge chunk of the video that we captured from this trip! AAAARRRGH! Such is the life of a Youtuber!
