Great Lakes Shipwreck Boat Tour
#lakeSuperiorShipwrecks #UpperPenninsula #Michigan

The Great Lakes are 5 huge freshwater lakes located between the US and Canada and are full of natural wonder and beauty. They have been important in trade and shipping for centuries, and boats have crossed their waters since as early as the 17th century. Thousands of ships have been sunk on the great lakes and many of their wrecks have never been found.

Our shipwreck tour took us to two different shipwrecks both that met similar fates, due to terrible storms on Lake Superior. The first was the Bermuda, a 150 foot wooden schooner that sunk in 1870. Although the animation at the beginning of this video was a bit dramatized the story of how the Bermuda sank was true. Overtaken by a gale on October 14th off Grand Marais, the pounding waves of the furious lake caused the ship to start to leak and despite bringing it into shelter in Munising Bay, the ship sank dragging everyone aboard down with it. At the last moment the pressure of the water caused the cabin deck to burst open allowing all but three of the ships crew to escape.

The Bermuda is a popular scuba diving site because the wreck sits in such shallow and calm water. Looking down from the surface you can still see the holes where it's masts used to be. The deck of the ship sits only 10 feet below the surface.

The second shipwreck we visited was the Herman H. Hettler a steam barge that wrecked on a rock reef just off Trout Point, on Grand Island. The Hettler was carrying 1,100 tons of table salt and had been seeking shelter from a fall gale when a compass error caused the wreck. The impact was so violent that the Hettler got stuck on the rocks, and the waves working it against the reef began to tear the ship apart. The crew luckily were all able to make it to Munising the next day using their lifeboats. The ship however was not so lucky. What was left of the ship after being ravaged on the rocks was eventually blown up with dynamite by the coast guard because it posed a navigational hazard. Today the Hettler's remains are scattered over a half mile of lake bottom.

We only visited two shipwrecks on our boat tour, but there are literally thousands all over the great lakes. This region is stunningly beautiful and the stories that each of these wrecks tell are pretty awesome. We had no idea when we came to visit the Upper Peninsula that it would have so much history, recreation, and beauty. It's definitely worth a visit if you ever get the chance!
