Within a day trip of Tokyo lies Chichibu. Rich with scenic views and history, it has a number of temples - which together with those on the Saigoku and Bando pilgrimage routes - form one long trail across Japan. It was said that back in the pilgrimage peak of the early 1800s, somewhere between 20,000 - 30,000 pilgrims were recorded passing along the Chichibu trail in one day. Now an almost-forgotten route, come with us as we get horrifically lost, but enjoy every minute of the Chichibu 34 Kannon Pilgrimage trail.
