Indian Loop Trail at Pioneertown Mountains Preserve is an 8.8-mile loop with 1,600 feet of elevation gain, climbing to 5,541-foot Chaparrosa Peak. The route transitions from desert scrub through chaparral to pine forest, then descends through Pipes Canyon along a seasonal creek. The preserve sits between Joshua Tree and the San Gorgonio Wilderness, giving you high desert and mountain ecosystems in one hike. Best hiked in spring and fall when temperatures are moderate. No permits required, but bring plenty of water as there are no reliable sources on trail.
