iOS 17 added offline Apple Maps to the watch, but only if your phone is nearby. Goose Maps lets you download OpenStreetMap tiles directly to the Apple Watch and navigate with no phone required. I walk through choosing map styles with contour lines, saving large areas like national parks, and testing routing and elevation profiles on the Pacific Crest Trail. Turn-by-turn alerts aren't fully reliable yet, but for browsing detailed topo maps in airplane mode and following saved tracks, it works well enough to test.
