The Bright Angel Trail drops into the Grand Canyon from the South Rim with turnarounds at 1.5 Mile Resthouse (3 miles round trip, 1,100 feet), 3 Mile Resthouse (6 miles, 2,100 feet), Havasupai Garden (9 miles, 3,000 feet), and Plateau Point (12.2 miles, 3,200 feet). Water is available seasonally at the resthouses and year-round at Havasupai Garden. The trail is well-maintained with tunnels, shade, and bathrooms, but the climb back out is where most people struggle. Start early, carry enough water between resthouse stops, and turn around if you're not feeling strong. Mule traffic has right of way. No permit needed for day hikes above the Colorado River.
