Brown Mountain Dam is a 7.6 mile out-and-back in Altadena with roughly 900 feet of elevation gain. The trail follows the Arroyo Seco into Angeles National Forest, passing oak and sycamore groves, old ruins, and shaded picnic areas before reaching the abandoned dam and its seasonal waterfall. It's a flat, mostly shaded route that works for all skill levels. You'll start in a suburban neighborhood, but within a mile you're surrounded by trees and water. No permit required. Best hiked after winter rain when the creek is flowing. Also known as the JPL Trail or Arroyo Seco Trail.
