Recorded on 11 February 1968, ‘Hey Bulldog’ is one of the last authentic performances by The Beatles as a group (before their group ‘decline’ on the White Album). In this video, we analyse the basic track.
By take 10, the band had achieved a compact, riff-based performance built around Lennon's aggressive piano figure and a powerful rhythm.
From there, overdubs were added, including additional drums, bass, the controversial guitar solo, double-tracked lead vocals, and backing vocals. The spontaneous exchange of barks between Lennon and McCartney during the outro led to the final change of the song's title from ‘Hey Bullfrog’ to ‘Hey Bulldog’.
Interestingly, much of this session was filmed while the promotional video for Lady Madonna was being recorded. It remains one of the few documented moments of The Beatles actively recording in the studio.
