On 23 February 1967, during the first recording sessions for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Beatles began working on an idea that Paul had brought to the table: he’d been inspired by the phrase ‘meter maid’ in a newspaper, which had caught his attention because it sounded very American and, in some way, suggestive. From there, he imagined a romantic story involving a parking warden, although he originally thought it would be a song expressing hatred towards them.
