There is a LOT of land in the United States. More than 2 BILLION acres in fact. You might even own some. Most of that land is privately held. But just under one third of all land in the United States is owned by the Federal Government.
This is the land our National Parks are on. And our National Forests. And our National Wildlife Refuges. And many of our most important conservation lands. To manage that land, the Federal Government relies on 4 main agencies: the National Park Service, the Fish and Wildlife Service, the Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management.
Together, those agencies manage 94% of the land owned by the Federal Government. Each of them manages the land they’re responsible for in a different way. The choices made by these 4 agencies in how to manage our public lands then, have major consequences for the overall health of these lands.
So, this video will give you an overview of each of those 4 Land Management Agencies, how much land they oversee, how they’re organized, and most importantly, how they manage the land they’re responsible for. These are YOUR public lands after all, and I hope this video will help you be just a tiny bit more knowledgeable about how they’re run. Enjoy!
