We recently had someone ask about proper technique when doing one of my favorite exercises: face pulls. Specifically, they wondered if they should point their thumbs backwards rather than "in" (towards their head) to create more external rotation. While pointing your thumbs back can be a good reminder to keep your shoulders properly engaged ("back and down"), it doesn't actually create more external rotation because you're simply rotating your forearm or wrist.
