For three years, the Greater Hartford NAACP's Wake Up Wednesdays initiative has brought resources and community support to Hartford's North End as part of efforts to reduce violence.

The initiative began after a string of eight homicides in 10 days in August 2023, including multiple killings in the North End. Wake Up Wednesdays connects residents with basic needs and services including food, clothing and health screenings.

Hartford police data shows the city recorded 36 homicides in 2023, 22 in 2024 and 11 in 2025. So far this year, there have been 15 homicides, including six in the North End.

Organizers say Wake Up Wednesdays is one part of a larger network of organizations and police working to reduce violence across Hartford. The initiative has also expanded to New Haven.
