On Thursday, March 19, 2026, around 8 p.m., a tragic crash occurred in Harlem, Manhattan, at West 125th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard, right outside the Apollo Theater. A 49-year-old driver in a red Hyundai Tucson was speeding and reportedly lost control, striking two delivery workers on bicycles (likely e-bikes), sending them flying. One bicyclist was killed (pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital), and the other was critically injured.
The vehicle then collided with multiple other vehicles, including a tractor-trailer, an unoccupied NYPD vehicle, a RAV4 (driven by a 40-year-old man), and a parked Lexus (with two men inside, ages 23 and 28). The three vehicle occupants were injured but taken to hospitals in stable condition with pain complaints.
The busy block—typically filled with people, buses, cars, and bikes—has bus lanes and speed restrictions, but witnesses described the car as going excessively fast, veering out of its lane, and seeming out of control. A French-speaking vendor witness suggested the driver may have been under the influence or drunk.
The driver was pulled from the vehicle, treated for injuries, and taken into police custody. Charges are pending, and police are investigating possible intoxication.
