In the early morning hours of March 20, 2026 (around 12:20–1:30 a.m.), a 47-year-old La Porte resident named Roger Turner, wanted on a Harris County narcotics warrant, led Galveston County Sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed pursuit northbound on Highway 146 after refusing a traffic stop for a non-functioning brake light; speeds exceeded 100 mph until the chase ended in a business parking lot near 1320 Wharton Weems Blvd (a gas station area) in La Porte, TX, where Turner exited his still-moving white commercial pickup truck (TX plates EJP0599), produced a handgun, proceeded to self-inflict himself with a GSW (with a GCS of 3 reported), suffering critical life-threatening injuries; he was life-flighted to Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center, narcotics (including methamphetamine) were found in the vehicle, a gun was recovered nearby/on scene, no officers discharged weapons or sustained injuries, no visible vehicle damage occurred, and the Major Crimes Unit is investigating.
