Hard Marriage or Abuse? Recognizing Patterns and Escaping Control
Karen DeArmond Gardner talks about emotional abuse, her own personal escape story, and her interview with Focus on the Family, and what she wishes she could say louder: She explains that focusing only on physical harm overlooks emotional abuse and controlling behavior.
She says abuse is best identified through repeated patterns of behavior that are hard to see while living in them, like being inside a maze, especially as tactics shift and distract from the overall pattern.
She describes how subtle provocation can lead to explosive reactions that are then used to label the victim as abusive, including examples involving law enforcement.
She recounts realizing after reading a domestic abuse article that her husband was an abuser, feeling shame at identifying as abused, and later planning a fearful escape with her mother, culminating in leaving the day after Christmas.
She emphasizes there is no “scale,” and that abuse is not a marriage problem but an abuse problem.

Defintion:
What’s a Life-Saving Divorce?A Life-Saving Divorce is the opposite of an “I’m bored” divorce, or an “I miss the party life” divorce. It is a divorce for serious reasons: to find relief from a pattern of sexual immorality, physical violence, chronic emotional abuse, felony behavior, family-crushing addictions, or abandonment through neglect and indifference.
