Hans Nielsen, professor emeritus in geophysics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, has been attending American Geophysical Union (AGU) annual meetings since the late 1960s. Thursday he presented his research into the streamer characteristics of sprites, elusive flashes of light in the upper atmosphere associated with lightning.
Hans has served UAF with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1967 to 2010, according to an announcement upon his retirement. He has significantly advanced human understanding about the workings of the aurora borealis and revolutionized the technology used to study atmospheric phenomena. He has designed instrumentation used in several space probes and has since 1971 published on average four articles per year about his revolutionary atmospheric studies.
