Mount Edgecumbe volcano in Southeast Alaska sits in a place where a volcano shouldn’t really be sitting. Research underway with new federal funding aims to solve this mystery. Part of the research project includes making a magma pellet similar to what Mount Edgecumbe produced. The human-made magma will help scientists learn about the reawakened volcano's upper plumbing system — its magma reservoirs, conduits and cracks in which magma is stored and travels to the surface.
