I've not had success with this concept before (after trying various times in the past). It seems it's best to use a shorter & narrower spindle that fits nicely in the chuck of the drill.

I used a 3/8" diameter wooden dowel for the spindle and a piece split-off from a 2x4 for the fireboard.

The goal was only to get a coal.
