The return run of the double headed Great Western Castles would see the pair obliterate the 3 mile Climb of Hatton Bank. The climb starts just after Warwick station and heads up to Hatton Station. What we were treated to was nothing over than spectacular with the Great Western duo taking the bank in a barnstorming fashion with a 62mph passage over top, while the load was a light one, with just five coaches per engine to haul, the pair were signal checked near Warwick Parkway, so they could of gone quicker. The gradient From Warwick Station is not steep, though its a good pull and at a gradient of 1/108, 1/103 and 1/110 it will always make a locomotive sing !
This topped off a memorable day with Tyseley's deadly duo and it was great to witness the unusual sight of two Great Western Castles on the mainline. With two operational Castles now available attentions will turn to other double headed runs with the Welsh Marches next up in May and maybe the Devon Banks which could end the exodus of Great Western steam in Devon & Corwall.
