About the songwriters:
Irving Kahal (1903-1942) one of the best known popular song lyricists went to New York at an early age and toured with various road shows. He was a singer in Gus Edwards' Minstrels and began writing songs at the age of 18. In 1925 Kahal and began his long-time association with composer Sammy Fain with whom he wrote many top song hits. In 1932 Kahal went to Hollywood and wrote for Warner Brothers. He also wrote for several musical comedies including "Right This Way" "Everybody's Welcome" and Ed Wynn's show "Boys and Girls Together". In 1936 he wrote "The Night is Young and You're So Beautiful" for the Billy Rose show at the Texas Centennial Exposition, Fort Worth. He also wrote lyrics for "By a Waterfall", "I Can Dream, Can't I?", "Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella On A Rainy Day", "Left My Sugar Standing In The Rain", "I'll Be Seeing You", and "When I Take My Sugar To Tea."
Harry Richman (1995-1972) was singing in vaudeville at the age of twelve but World War I interrupted his career briefly as he served in the United States Navy. His career was revived in the early 1920s when he became the accompanist for Mae West and the Dolly Sisters in their New York productions. He opened his own "Club Richman" on Park Avenue which gave the performer more fame. At the same time he was appearing in various Broadway shows such as Varieties of 1922 and the George White Scandals of 1926. In the 1930s he continued appearing in musical shows and appeared in several Hollywood movies, his most successful being "Puttin' on the Ritz". Richman was one of the highest paid performers on Broadway and he had a reputation as a playboy and gambler. He also became a respected songwriter known best for writing "Miss Annabelle Lee" and "Muddy Water".
