His famed trademark was the battered top hat and catch-phrase "Is Everybody happy? It is hard to find a photo of him without the hat. He claims he won that top hat in a dice game in 1917, from a cab driver, and he wore it that night on stage in his vaudeville act.
This song was introduced in the musical review "Rufus LeMaire's Affairs" starring Sophie Tucker and Ted Lewis. The show was opened in Chicago at the Woods Theatre in 1926. After the Chicago run the show was booked at the new Majestic Theatre on Broadway on March 28, 1927. Charlotte Greenwood replaced Tucker in the New York production. Lewis sang and performed with his band, the "Musical Clowns". Despite such talents as Ted Lewis, Charlotte Greenwood, and Peggy Fears, the show played only 56 times.
