This recording was first released in 1927 as Victor 20557 following the Broadway production of Ziegfeld's "Rio Rita." When Rio Rita , the motion picture musical was released in 1929, Victor reissued the same recording again as Victor 22182. Jacques Renard was born in 1897 in Kiev, Russia, but raised near Boston Massachusetts. He received classical training on the violin but chose instead to lead a dance orchestra in the Boston area as well as conduct an orchestra for radio broadcasts. He recorded extensively for Victor, Columbia and Brunswick between 1926 and the late 1930s. His orchestra also appeared on several top-rated radio shows, including Burns & Allen and Eddie Cantor. One of his early sidemen was a young Glenn Miller. Renard was a large man and his size was often noted in news articles and gossip columns with the frequently used adjective, "portly" since he weighed about 300 lb. Renard died in Miami Florida in 1973.
