Paul Whiteman was dubbed "the king of jazz" some 85 years ago, and that's what he was. It was he who made jazz respectable. But there was also the symphonic Whiteman. And there was the Whiteman who fused Jazz and symphony when he commissioned George Gershwin to compose "Rhapsody in Blue." Not the least of Whiteman's many gifts was his knack for spotting talented newcomers and giving them both the opportunity and discipline to perfect their musicianship. Paul Whiteman was a giant in the realm of popular music. He will be remembered affectionately and gratefully for his rare combination of talent, taste and showmanship.
