I'm playing Guild Wars 1/Reforged from level 1 to 4 as a female Warrior doing some things for the 2nd time, others for the 1st time - I've owned the game since 2005 or 2006 but I naver really played it besides creating four characters and then logging out.
I did play for 6 levels in February this year using my oldest character which is a Ranger, but now I'm using one of the characters that I created back in February.
Guild Wars, a game released in 2005 (Propecies), with an expansion later that same year (Factions), another expansion in 2006 (Nightfall) and yet another one in 2007 (Eye of the North) - it's been updated with a 20th Anniversary Quality of Life-update on December 3rd, 2025 - and between 2007 and 2025 it's still had players even though not many outside of the American servers, and had been kept alive with gifts and such to active players - but this is the first real update since like 2007 if I'm understanding it right.
Guild Wars is an MMORPG (Massive-Multiplayer-Online-Roleplaying-Game) but plays very differently from World of Warcraft, and is more of a mix between Diablo 2 and World of Warcraft - with a focus on Player Versus Player (PVP) rather than PVE against the AI.
However, the Nightfall Expansion added the ability to play the game alone or solo with the help of AI companions, you can even hire your own characters as companions, and have a team of 8 heroes - after you've reached level 20 in the game.
Level 20 is the maximum level but that's just the end of the prologue as this game is focused more on guilds and team-work with other players or AI companions to achieve goals and complete Missions.
The Guild Wars: Reforged update adds enhanced textures, a better optimized UI/Interface for handheld Steam Decks and modern TV's - and it improves things in the game, gives players gifts or bonuses for doing new missions etc - it's not a remaster but it is the biggest update in years. The developers also do promise more updates going forward.
As far as I could tell the Eutropean Servers had quite a few players, and back in February this year they had almost none.
The American servers are even more crowded.
