Most lifters think shoulder health comes down to mobility or warm-ups. That’s only part of the story.

One of the simplest and most overlooked techniques in the bench press is how you grip the bar.

When you actively squeeze—or try to “crush”—the bar, you create irradiation through the entire upper extremity. This increases co-contraction of the forearms, triceps, and shoulder stabilizers, improving joint centration and reducing excessive humeral head movement under load.

In practical terms: a stronger grip leads to a more stable shoulder.
