Reely Interesting | Grinder-Man - G-VTR01 (1998 High Quality 60FPS VHS Video Performance Art & Music Collection) @ReelyInteresting | Uploaded February 2023 | Updated October 2024, 2 days ago.
This is Grinder-Man's "G-VTR01" (SRVM-5618), the first and only video release by the group. It was released only on VHS.
Grinder-Man is a Japanese performance art group lead by Hitoshi Taguchi. Originally known for their eye-catching performances with portable angle grinders, the group has a truly diverse portfolio and wide range of works on top of their "grinder" origins. It is difficult to categorize them as they go "far beyond the boundaries of art" (per their website).
This release appears to be one of the earliest recordings of the Grinder-Man group, which, at this time, appeared to be operating as a quartet consisting of:
- Hitoshi Taguchi (田口仁史)
- Tomoki Ohshita (大下智樹)
- Manabu Hirayama (平山学)
- Jun Yamamura (山村循)
The video is a collection of their performances. It contains one of their famous grinder performances, along with a couple of "Go Head" box-head segments and a few additional unique bits. All performances are to exclusive songs written by Grinder-Man themselves.
I hope that this video puts some "spark" into your day!
Fun fact 1: Grinder-Man appears to be closely associated with Maywa Denki, creators of the Otamatone. They made an appearance in the Maywa Denki video, "Maywa Denki Pictorial 3," released on VHS and LaserDisc.
Fun fact 2: Grinder-Man also made live appearances with Yasutaka-Nakata-produced shibuya-kei-turned-electro group, capsule, in 2010 and 2011.

Performances:
Theme of GRINDER MAN
Mother Voice
Go Head
Go Head Parallel
Rightly Light
G-Tank
NOTE: I don't believe that the chapters are linear. Therefore, I have not added time-stamps to the above list of performances.

This was played back using a restored Victor HR-W1 W-VHS player.

(Not sponsored) As previously mentioned, Grinder-Man is still operating, albeit as a duo (with choreographer, Makiko Izu). They still perform quite often in Japan and post videos online. Their most recent efforts infuse performance art with augmented reality (AR).
