The Smoky Mountains had Christmas Miracle on the night of Christmas Eve 2020, with many inches of snow falling over the region, giving us our first white Christmas in many years. As soon as the holiday was over, myself and many other intrepid railfans braved the icy roads to the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad hoping to see 2-8-0 1702 thundering through a winter wonderland. Unfortunately, we found out upon arrival that 1702 had broken down and was out of service for the remainder of the season. While this did dampen the excitement somewhat, everyone still managed to have a great time chasing the diesels into the Nantahala Gorge. All in all, a good way to cap off an... "interesting" year of train chasing.
