On a frigid January day with temperatures dipping into the single-digits, Southeastern Ohio's Hocking Valley Scenic Railway was keeping warm with a series of steam specials pulled by former Ohio Power Company 3, an 0-6-0 built by Baldwin in 1920. These excursions ran from the railway's depot in Nelsonville along the Hocking River to East Logan. This was my first visit to the Buckeye State's only regular standard gauge steam operation, and I was delighted to see the little switcher rambling on through the snow despite the frigid cold and some mechanical problems that delayed both of day's excursions. I was also thankful to have bought a car with all-wheel drive as most of the good photo spots were thoroughly iced over. All in all, a good day out and a great way to kick off the new year. I look forward to returning to the Hocking Hills in warmer weather.
