This technique follows the early perfect grafting videos. Using waste yarn to hold the stitches of the replacement piece allows you to graft the Contrast stitches first, skipping behind the Main colour stitches. Once the Contrast stitches are in place, the process can be repeated with the Main stitches.
Planning is important, if possible choose the simplest row for the join. For example is Rnd 4 is (5 Main, 1 Contrast) repeating. I would plan to end the lower piece on completion of a Rnd 3, and stitch the replacement stitches to the base of Rnd 5.
