Double knitting layers are easily connected at every colour change across a row, but horizontal colour changes such as stripes do not connect the layers. This threaded colour change brings the far layer to the front and takes the near layer to the back. This links the layers and creates a colour change. In addition it adds texture creating an indent where the stitches cross, rather like quilting. It's slow but used in moderation, its a fun way to add dimension to you double knit fabric.
