The side opening pocket is a wonderful thing. All worked and finished without breaking your yarn. Part 1 shows the preparation for the pocket and Row 1. Part 2 covers Row 2 to completion.

Preamble Cast-on 16 stitches, work 4 rows Garter and 4 rows Stocking stitch, end on completion of a purl row.
Prep RS Row: Knit to side of pocket (3 sts), place Marker 1, make 10 SRIs, place Marker 2, knit to end (3 sts).
Both sides grow by one row, but pocket stitches don’t grow, just double. The new stitches form the back layer of the pocket.
SRI: Slip Raised Increase. Knit into the right shoulder of the parent stitch below the next one waiting to be knit and then slip the original stitch (purlwise). This is very similar to a right-slanting or raised increase (where the original stitch is then worked). This creates stitch pairs with the Far layer stitch ahead of the Near layer stitch.
For practice, begin Row 1 with a contrasting colour. Work each four-row repeat in alternating colours.
Row 1 WS: Purl to Marker 2, (p1, s1wyib) x 6, (k1, s1) x 3, k1, turn (one stitch short of Marker 1).
One row on Left Edge and Pocket Front.
Row 2 RS: S1, (s1wyif, k1) x 9, turn (at Marker 2).
One row on Pocket Front.
Row 3 WS: (S1, p1) x 10, Marker 1, p3.
One row on Right Edge and Pocket Back.
Row 4 RS: K3, Marker 1, (k1, s1) x 10, Marker 2, knit to end.
One row on Right Edge and Pocket Back and Left Edge.
Finish your pocket on completion of a Row 3.
Joining Row RS: Knit to Marker 1, k2t x 10, Marker 2, knit to end.
If your stitches are conventionally mounted, the slip-purls on Row 3 and the knit-slips on Row 4 can be done in one movement. To make the knit-slip; just as you have pulled the new stitch through with the right-hand needle, the right-hand needle tip can then be slid into the stitch to be slipped before fully completing the stitch.
