This is me jumping on the easily-accessible plasma toroid train after seeing Termadnator's and YSpace Labs' videos using what I would guess to be mainly neon bulbs. The ones they are using appear to be the same one I had success with. The one which didn't work so well seems to be more concentrated with different gases. Either way there appears to be a really interesting resonance that forms with the load that gas creates during the donut formation, which seems to like hovering on small to moderate power consumption before trying to shift into a different state by itself.
To be honest I wasn't expecting much from this bulb. I figured a high enough power level would get it bright enough to enjoy if I could even get it to form something at all, but the little strange oscillations and beads that formed were pretty cool. I guess I've seen that similarly in xenon tubes as well, but in this case none of it really wants to freely move around outside of circling the electric field from the coil. The act of it moving around in and of itself really helps demonstrate the physics, and that it's not just some effect where the gas glows following the coil/bulb shape as it almost appears to do here. Of course others have done far more extensive research on these than just my minutes of tinkering so I really have no idea as of yet.

The circuit is just the same basic one everyone else is using and I just showed it in the last video. While it seemed like I needed to actually form more of a closed "ring" on the top of the coil for it to work, that might not have been necessary at all and the exact shape of the coil itself is probably not crucial (outside of initial toroid formation).
I'm going to mess around some more with the bulb I couldn't get going to see if maybe something magical might happen with it, not likely though.
