Pap smears were routinely given to girls as young as 15 and 16. Unnecessary abnormal results led to surgical procedures that sometimes affected fertility. A 2006 guideline shift recommended waiting until age 21 and extending intervals to 3–5 years for low-risk patients with normal results. Dr. Hartman learned this in the military in 2006 and found almost no one had adopted it when he returned to civilian practice in Richmond in 2007.
