Interstitial cystitis affects 3–8 million women and 1–4 million men in the US. It presents like a UTI but also causes pelvic pain, pain during intercourse, and sometimes systemic muscle aches — leading to years of misdiagnosis. Average time to diagnosis is 4 to 7 years. 61% of those eventually diagnosed were initially told nothing was wrong. Proper evaluation requires cystoscopy and targeted lab testing that is often delayed for years.
