The Women’s Health Initiative studied older women, many of them smokers, using synthetic oral hormones including a progestin known to cause tumors in animals. The findings were released before the full data were analyzed. A Yale study later estimated tens of thousands of premature deaths resulted from women being denied access to HRT.
