In 2007, a local infectious disease physician told Dr. Hartman that chronic Lyme disease wasn’t real and didn’t exist in Central Virginia. The CDC reports approximately 476,000 new Lyme disease cases per year in the US — more than breast cancer. Only about 35,000 of those cases are actually diagnosed. Dr. Hartman has spent nearly two decades becoming a Lyme specialist because there was no one else his patients could go to.
